19-year-old Irena is a servant in the home of a Nazi officer. When she discovers that the Nazis are going to exterminate all the Jews in the ghetto, she decides to help 12 Jewish workers hide in the safest place she can imagine – the basement in the Nazi officer's house.
During the following war years, Irena uses her intelligence, sense of humor, and cunning to keep her friends' hiding place a secret until the day of the Nazi regime's defeat.
